Kentucky, If you were wondering where winter ran off to... get ready for this weekend.

WLEX is reporting:

We'll take Thursday off from active weather and with a ridge of high pressure building in you can expect highs just below average in the low to mid 40s and mostly to eventually partly cloudy skies. We'll dip into the mid 20s tonight and make it back into the upper 30s to low 40s Friday.

A cold front will dive south out of the Great Lakes and throw light rain showers our way late Friday that will shift to light snow showers Friday night with accumulation possible.

It's too early to say how much for sure but an inch or two is possible. That cold front is the leading edge of an arctic airmass that will overwhelm the Commonwealth this weekend.

Get ready for highs at or below freezing and lows in the teens... the coldest air we've seen since mid January!

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the higher elevations of eastern Kentucky from 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon to 11 p.m. Wednesday evening.

A vigorous low pressure system will form on the cold front over the Tennessee Valley Tuesday night and then move across the area Wednesday. The combination of the cold air in place over the area and the low pressure system will allow for heavy bursts of snow.

The advisory is in effect for Bell, Harlan, Letcher and Pike counties, and include the cities of Middlesboro, Pineville, Harlan, Whitesburg and Pikeville. Accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected above 2,000 feet. Below 2,000 feet, up to an inch of snow is possible. The heaviest snow is expected over Harlan and Letcher counties.

While the initial snow accumulations will be on grassy areas, as temperatures continue to fall or the snow rate increases, snow will accumulate on some area roads in the highest elevations. Bridges and overpasses will be especially susceptible to accumulations, as will the high mountain passes of eastern Kentucky.

At at lower elevations., some snow may accumulate temporarily, but then melt as soon as the snow rate slows down. As temperatures fall during the evening, some roads may become icy, especially in shady areas.

A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving. Source>>>
