Eastern Kentucky University’s Division of Continuing Education and Outreach will offer more than 120 community education courses from January through June

Eastern Kentucky University’s Division of Continuing Education and Outreach will offer more than 120 community education courses from January through June, including many new offerings.

Thirteen new classes are on tap, including: Fundamentals of Crimping Techniques, Building A Business on eBay, Improvisational Comedy for (almost) Everyone, Understanding the Check Engine Light, Advanced Dog Obedience, Wire Wrapped Jewelry, and more.

The lineup also includes basket-weaving classes in Corbin as well as a wide range of instructor-facilitated on-line courses through a partnership with Ed2Go (www.ed2go.com/eku).

EKU community education classes meet a wide variety of needs and interests among all ages and skill levels. Courses are scheduled in arts and crafts, cooking, computers, personal growth, and recreation and exercise. Many of the classes meet only once, while others meet over a period of several weeks. Most of the Richmond campus classes are held in the Perkins Building, located on Kit Carson Drive, where public parking spaces are plentiful. Other Richmond classes are held elsewhere on campus or in the community.

Pre-registration is urged for all classes. To register, for more information or to obtain a brochure, call 859-622-1228, or, toll free, 877-358-6742 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays, or visit www.ceo.eku.edu/communityeducation to see the entire catalog and/or enroll online. EKU’s Community Education Office is located in Room 229 of the Perkins Building.

Individuals age 65 or older are entitled to enroll in any Community Education class for only a $5 processing fee, thanks to the O’Donnell Scholarship. The scholarship does not, however, cover textbooks, class supplies, trips or tours.

Computer training courses cover many popular software programs, such as popular Microsoft Office programs and Adobe Photoshop, as well as courses in Computer Basics, eBay and Facebook.
Also, several computer science camps for youth are scheduled in June, including Japanese Animation, Robotics, Architecture Design and Creative Scrapbooking.

Personal growth courses include several writing and publication classes taught by Michael Garrett, Stephen King’s first editor and publisher, as well as courses in genealogy, digital photography, couponing, adult first aid/CPR/AED, business etiquette, coupon clipping, handwriting analysis, puppy and dog obedience, small business development, investment basics, and estate planning, among other classes.

Dozens of arts and crafts courses are scheduled. They include dozens of basketweaving and bake shop options, and courses on knitting, soy wax candles, and holiday floral arrangements, among others. Children ages 7-12 may enjoy a summer sewing and cooking camp. Music classes include Old Time 5-String Banjo (beginner and intermediate), Piano Lessons for Busy People, Mountain Dulcimer and Guitar.

Recreation and exercise classes run the gamut of activities, age requirements and skills. They include Exercise for Adults with Chronic Conditions, Body Recall and Body Recall Lite, Beginning Fencing, T’ai Chi Chih, a wide range of dance classes, Adult and Junior Tennis, Aqua Zumba, and Yoga (children and adults), plus the usual array of children’s and adult swimming lessons, as well as competitive swimming groups and lifeguard training classes.

EKU also continues to offer a wide array of workforce education courses, as well as a state-of-the-art outdoor challenge course.

“Man, Woman, Wild” produced by an Eastern Kentucky University faculty member and filmed in the nearby Red River Gorge will air on the cable network Thursday, Jan. 5, at 9 p.m.

"Man, Woman, Wild" Episode Produced by EKU Faculty Member Airs on Discovery Jan. 5

An episode of the Discovery Channel program “Man, Woman, Wild” produced by an Eastern Kentucky University faculty member and filmed in the nearby Red River Gorge will air on the cable network Thursday, Jan. 5, at 9 p.m.

Emerson St. John, media supervisor in EKU’s Department of Communication, was asked by the Kentucky Film Commission if he would serve as location producer. St. John had previously directed an episode of “Pawn Stars” and acted in various projects.

Working behind the scenes as production assistants were EKU students Rebecca Combs and Taylor Taulbee, both broadcasting and electronic media majors. The trio spent a week in the rugged gorge.

“Man, Woman, Wild” is a reality series featuring former U.S. Army Special Forces survival expert Mykel Hawke and his television journalist wife, Ruth England, who must survive with limited supplies in demanding locations worldwide. The first season debuted in July 2010, and episodes for the second season began airing in September 2011.

The Jan. 5 episode is entitled “Newts and Roots.”
