Here it is, a day shy of 21 years since The Kentucky Headhunters played the release show for their breakthrough album Pickin’ on Nashville, and they’re promoting a new album that sounds like it was made by a band of hillbilly outlaws — certainly not a group of guys who took home CMA awards for both Album and Vocal Group of the Year.
Dixie Lullabies — the band’s first album of new material in a good long while — has the scuzzy guitar attack of Keith Richards and country-rocking boogies galore; “Boone’s Farm Boogie” and “Sugar Daddy” are two of its funkiest. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that founding Headhunters Doug Phelps, Greg Martin and the Young brothers, Richard and Fred, didn’t cut this one in a Music Row studio but in a house out in the boonies where they’ve been jamming for decades.
Richie Owens & The Farm Bureau and Johnny Solinger open.
