Kentucky State Police Warn of Online Scams

Kentucky State Police wish to remind citizens of various online scams which could be a financial danger to anyone responding. Over the past several weeks, KSP has received reports of various scams coming mostly in the form of email messages randomly sent to unsuspecting individuals. These scams are commonly referred to as phishing scams. These scams often look official, but have common details which are easy to spot. Phishing scams are defined as a way of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

Most scams are relatively easy to spot. These messages usually include poor grammar and often ask for correspondence to be sent to a foreign country. The best rule of thumb is to immediately delete any messages which appear suspicious. Never respond to a suspected scam. For more information regarding scams, you can visit the Kentucky Office of the Attorney General website at www.ag.ky.gov.

The University of Kentucky's International Hospitality Program (IHP) is seeking volunteers to serve as "host families" for international students.

Did you Know: You can help make far away from home seem a little bit closer. Whether you're single, married, old, or young, volunteer to serve as a "host family" with the University of Kentucky (UK), International Hospitality Program (IHP). Provide companionship for a year and create a lasting bond for a lifetime.

The University of Kentucky's International Hospitality Program (IHP) is seeking volunteers to serve as "host families" for international students.

Each year, around 300 new international students arrive at the University of Kentucky, representing 104 different countries around the world. IHP host families are there to provide friendship and support for these international students while they are far from home.

The students do not live with host families, nor do the host families bear any financial responsibility for the students. The program gives volunteers an opportunity to interact with and provide needed companionship to students from other cultures, without the same level of commitment that having a live-in exchange student requires.

Although the host family commitment lasts only for one year, many students and their host families form lifelong bonds, says Judy Phillips, IHP board of directors secretary and public relations chair.

"It's as enriching an opportunity for the host family as we hope it is beneficial to the students," Phillips said.

Students and new hosts both undergo a brief orientation and training session to understand what is expected on both sides. Once a student is matched with a host, activities vary depending on their mutual interests and availability.

IHP sponsors several events throughout the year, including a welcome picnic in August (co-sponsored by the Lexington Rotary Club), shopping trips at the start of each semester, an ice cream social, a square dance and chili supper, and a Valentine's Day reception. A holiday turkey meal is served in January to welcome the students who arrive mid-year.

Hosts may be single or maried, live with or without children, and be of any age. Those interested in joining IHP may contact Judy Phillips at (859) 277-2224 or Mary Lynne Vickers, host development chair, at (859) 361-9603, preferably by Jan. 31.

RunJumpDev – Global Game Jam 2012 is a event where participants come together over a weekend and build new games.  Everyone is given a common theme or constraint and the fun is seeing the different, creative directions that people take the idea.  In the beginning people pitch game ideas and teams are formed.  The teams then build small games or prototypes and finally present them at the end of the weekend.

RunJumpDev, Awesome Labs, and UK Video Game Developers Group are working together to host the event at Awesome Inc.  The Bluegrass Business Development Partnership is sponsoring the event, so meals and snacks will be provided and everyone can concentrate on making awesome games!

New to game development?  RunJumpDev and UK Video Game Developers Group will be hosting workshops about using Unity 3D.  More information about the workshops coming soon.

The game jam is for 48 hours from Friday, January 27th at 5pm to Sunday at 5pm.  Then we will have a results party where cash and prizes will be awarded.  We encourage participants to spend as much time working on their games, but it’s fine if you need to come and go.  And if you can’t participate in the event, you can attend the results party.  Come see the games, eat some food, and talk about how the games were made.

UK Cheerleading wins record 19th UCA National Championship

UK Cheerleading wins record 19th UCA National Championship

On Sunday, Kentucky cheerleading returned the Universal Cheerleader Association Championship to where it has spent most of the last 28 years.

Kentucky Wildcat Tickets

For a record 19th time, the Wildcats won the UCA national title at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. UK finished ahead of second-place Alabama, who ended a streak of three consecutive Kentucky titles in 2011.

"Kentucky has climbed the mountain once again and we stand alone," UK coach Jomo Thompson tweeted. "Championship #19 is coming home!"

The championship is UK's fourth in five years and seventh in nine. UK has failed to win the national championship just three times since 1995 and has reclaimed the title in the following year each time.

UK's title-winning routine can be seen above and full results of the competition can be seen here.

The Kentucky dance team also participated in the final round of national competition this weekend. Coach Dawn Duncan Walters and the Wildcats brought home a sixth-place finish in the Pom category and eighth place in Hip Hop.

Congratulations to both the cheerleading and dance teams!

Applying to the University of Kentucky Has Never Been Easier or More Fun

The dynamic new Web presence, also located at www.uky.edu/admission, incorporates the university's brand while offering easily accessible information for prospective students and parents to apply and connect with the university and all of Enrollment Management, including the offices of Undergraduate Admission, Academic Scholarships, Student Financial Aid, Registrar, Student Account Services, Veterans Resources, Adult Student Services and other resources. The site also incorporates social media and includes "see blue." video features and success stories of currently enrolled students and UK alumni.

Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Don Witt said focus groups provided valuable insight regarding the wants and needs of high school students searching for a college home. The feedback received provided a clear direction in creating a website that is easily navigated from a computer or mobile device and informative.

"The new applyuk.com has two audiences, the student who is just learning about the university and the student who has already decided to make UK their home," Witt said. "For the first-time visitor, the site needed to appeal and provide a quick introduction to UK. The returning visitor is more concerned with finding specific information about the application process. I feel that the new site does both very well."

"The overall feedback of the site has been overwhelmingly positive," Witt added. "The site is reflective of the institutional marketing efforts, our publications and message strategies featured during recruitment events."

The redesigned website was spearheaded by team members in Enrollment Management and UK's Office of Public Relations and Marketing. It was developed by UK's agency of record, Cornett Integrated Marketing Solutions, which has served as a partner with the university on other website designs, such as the university's homepage, www.uky.edu, the university's news website, www.uky.edu/uknow, and www.seeblue.com.

Prospective Wildcats are also encouraged to connect with undergraduate admissions via Facebook at www.facebook.com/universityofkentuckyadmissions, follow on Twitter at twitter.com/UKYAdmission and visit the YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/ukseeblue.

Kentucky attorney general warns about new computer scam

Office of the Attorney General
Attorney General Conway Warns Consumers about Tech Support Telemarketing Scam
Press Release Date:      Friday, January 06, 2012
Contact Information:      Shelley Catharine Johnson
Deputy Communications Director
502-696-5659 (office)

Attorney General Jack Conway is alerting consumers about a new telemarketing scam that is making its way across Kentucky. General Conway's Office of Consumer Protection has received more than two dozen complaints since mid-November about a "Tech Support" telemarketing scam. Consumers report that the scammers impersonate tech support specialists who claim to have detected a virus on the victims' computer.

"This is just another attempt by scammers to gain access to personal financial information and for the purpose of identity theft," General Conway said. "Never share personal information over the telephone with a stranger."

The "Tech Support" scam generally starts with the caller posing as a technical support engineer certified by a well-known company like Microsoft, Cisco, or Windows. Typically the caller claims that the phone call is in response to reports sent out automatically by the user's computer. The rogue tech support specialists offer to install what they claim are antivirus programs.

To add credibility to their story, the phony tech specialists ask the consumer to follow very specific steps to rid the system of the virus and fix the computer. By following the steps, the consumer gives the caller access to all of the data stored on their computer.

If you receive this type of call, General Conway asks consumers to keep the following in mind:

Computer and software companies do not make unsolicited calls offering tech support.
If you need tech support, contact the computer or software company at a number you know to be valid.
Never provide personal information or follow a caller's instructions when you don't know who is contacting you.

"Always be leery of unsolicited calls," General Conway said. "If a caller claims to be from your bank, your credit card company, Microsoft, or even your utility company, always have them provide a number and call them back. Only use a telephone number that you have looked up yourself. Do not call a number from an unsolicited email."

Consumers who have fallen victim to this scam, or a similar one, should follow these steps:

Contact your bank or credit card company and dispute the charge for any money you paid.
Immediately run anti-virus and anti-spyware software on your computer.
Monitor your credit report and place a security freeze on your credit.

For additional consumer protection tips or to file a consumer protection complaint online, visit http://ag.ky.gov/consumers or call the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-888-432-9257.

Last season, the Greyhounds recorded a two-game improvement over the year before, finishing 2010-2011 with a 15-15 overall record and 10-8 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The team played its best basketball of the season after the New Year dawned, going 7-2 in the month of January.

Loyola advanced to the MAAC Quarterfinals in 2010-2011, and three of the team's players earned postseason conference awards. Shane Walker was named to the All-MAAC Third Team, while Justin Drummond earned MAAC All-Rookie honors. J'hared Hall also became Loyola's first-ever winner of the MAAC Sixth-Player of the Year Award.

UK will not push for state funding of the Rupp Arena proposal. President Eli Capilouto, Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart and Coach John Calipari issue statement:

Statement from University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto, UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart and UK Men's Basketball Coach John Calipari:

“In what remains a challenging economy, we must be unified as a campus community about our priorities as we seek private support and finite state dollars to help fund our dreams for the University and for the Commonwealth. To that end, our Board of Trustees, our faculty and staff, and our students have spoken with a clear and unequivocal voice: Our primary focus should – and must -- be the construction and renovation of facilities and living and learning spaces so that we can revitalize the core of our campus and, in particular, further strengthen the undergraduate education we provide. Targeted investments in athletics facilities will be part of that equation as we continue to improve our competitive position across all sports. We also will further utilize this powerful brand to recruit and retain Kentucky’s best students.

We cannot at this time and in this economy support initiatives – such as infrastructure proposals being made relative to Rupp Arena -- that compete with pressing on-campus priorities for scarce state operating dollars and capital construction funds. We have communicated with Mayor Gray about this issue. He understands our perspective and has graciously engaged with us in ongoing, productive dialogue. We have pledged to continue to be an active partner in this process as the health and vibrancy of UK and Lexington are inextricably linked. We are fortunate to be in such a terrific and historic venue for college basketball and we are committed to our long-term future there.”

Kentucky Wildcat Fans Anthony Davis Needs Your Vote For ESPN the Magazine basketball representative.

Wildcats! Check out espn.com/next to vote for Freshman Anthony Davis as the ESPN the Magazine basketball representative.

AGE: 18 | HOMETOWN: Chicago
FAME CLAIM: 2011 McDonald's All-American; ESPNU No. 1 recruit overall for Class of 2011

KENTUCKY WILDCAT TICKETS

For Anthony Davis, basketball is all about being like Kevin. "Kevin Durant on offense, Kevin Garnett on defense," Davis says when asked to describe the game he's building. The Kentucky frosh, the top-rated prospect in his class, isn't being hyperbolic. An NBA Eastern Conference executive also brought up KG's name in describing the 6'10" forward, and the comparison didn't just end at their skill sets. "He has 'it,'" the exec says. "He has Garnett's demeanor. When you watch him, you know he's going to be special. He has a fluidity and grace that is unusual. He is probably the first pick in the draft." But that same exec also says it wouldn't surprise him if Davis were to spend another year at Kentucky, a la Jared Sullinger at Ohio State. Because as skilled as Davis is -- blocking shots with either hand, attacking the rim, nailing face-up jumpers -- he is obsessed with getting better. The Chicago native landed at Kentucky in part because of John Calipari's willingness to push him, and he's already trying to add a more refined post game to his repertoire. If that happens? The possibilities are downright scary.
